An Evolutionary Model: The 1996 Corvette Revisited

April 14th, 2009

Several things can be said about the Chevrolet Corvette series: including the polarizing reactions most buyers have towards their car. The eight-cylinder engine is at the heart of the strong emotions, it is powerful for its class and delivers a large amount of torque.

The restyled Corvette Base is equipped with a 5.7-liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The Chevrolet engine is mated to a General Motors four-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 1995 version.

The fuel system for the 1996 Corvette is a SFI system, running on gasoline . The fuel is regulated by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design.

The Corvette uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses leaf and leaf springs front and rear respectively.

96.20 of wheelbase allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers. It sits 46.30 inches off the ground. It seats a standard two passengers, with 2 doors. The dimensions of the Corvette Base are 178.50 inches long by 70.70 inches wide.

The listed retail price in 1996 (MSRP) was $37,225, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-high price. This price is in line with the industry average price for a two-door Hatchback.

The Corvette Base received an fuel efficiency rating of 16 – 17 MPG driving in the city and 25 – 27 when it came to highway driving. The gas-powered Corvette is a non-hybrid car.

The vehicle is available in several colors.

The standard warranty period for the Corvette is 60* months, or 50,000* miles, whichever comes first. This is standard in the hatchback market.

There are several reasons why the Chevrolet Corvette Base sold well in 1996. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Chevrolet, specifically a Corvette.

Good article. At first I felt like I needed to refute your review of the Chevrolet Corvette, but after further reflection I can see your point of view. Perhaps my personal Corvette Base is an abberation. What is everyone else’s experiences?
