Our Review of the 1991 BMW 850i Base

February 14th, 2009

A lot has been said about the BMW 850i for 1991. As BMW’s entry in the coupe market the 850i (and in this case specically the Base version) has maintained a solid reputation. The 2-door 850i is especially appealing to wide market segment, making it a perfect car to help BMW as a brand in general.

The restyled 850i Base is equipped with a BMW 5.0-liter 12-cylinder engine that utilizes a total of 24 valves. The engine is paired with a Getrag 5-speed transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for BMW.

The fuel system for the 1991 850i is a traditional Bosch Motronic, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 16.40 gallons.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The 850i has power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The car uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.

101.20 of wheelbase allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers. It sits a comfortable 54.30 inches off the ground. It seats a standard five passengers, with 2 doors. The dimensions of the 850i Base are 170.30 inches long by 64.80 inches wide.

The listed retail price in 1991 (MSRP) was $25,600, with an invoice cost of an industry-average price. This price is slightly higher than the industry average price for a two-door Coupe.

The 1991 850i gets 23 miles/gallon on the highway and only 18 in the city. This is average for a coupe car.

In 1990 and 1991 the 850i Base was availble in the exterior colors of several colors.

The standard warranty period for the 850i is 60* months, or 50,000* miles, whichever comes first. This is standard in the coupe market.

There are several reasons why the BMW 850i Base sold well in 1991. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a BMW, specifically a 850i.
