Impressions of the Chevrolet Corvette for 1996

February 7th, 2009

As time has gone by several things can be said about the Chevrolet Corvette series: including the strong reaction most buyers have towards their car. The 8-cylinder engine is at the core of the strong emotions, it is reliable for its class and delivers a huge amount of torque.

The Corvette Grand Sport is equipped with a General Motors 5.7 liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The Chevrolet engine is mated to a General Motors 4-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Chevrolet.

The 1996 Corvette’s traditional fuel system runs on gas. The fuel is regulated electronically, with a fuel-injected multi-port fuel injection style of design. The fuel tank holds 20.00 gallons.

The Corvette uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses leaf and leaf springs front and rear respectively.

The dimensions of the Corvette Grand Sport are 70.70 inches wide by 178.50 inches long. It sits a comfortable 46.30 inches off the ground. It seats a standard two passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 96.20 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $37,225 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-average price. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Hatchback.

The Corvette Grand Sport received a miles-per-gallon rating of 16 – 17 in-city driving and 25 – 27 when it came to long-distance. Being a gas-powered non-green car, this was exceptional.

In 1996 the Corvette came in the exterior colors of several colors. Other options were made available by the manufacturer.

The standard warranty period for the Corvette is 60* months, or 50,000* miles, whichever comes first. This is standard in the hatchback market.

There are several reasons why the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport sold well in 1996. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Chevrolet, specifically a Corvette.
