The First Impressions of the BMW 850i for 1992

A high point in the coupe market is the BMW 850i. In 1992 BMW rolled out an upgraded version of the 850i with one versions: Base. Sales for the 850i, especially the 850i Base, were brisk during 1992 and 1993. The improved reliability and the updated styling were responsible for the increased interest.

1992 BMW 850i Base Specs

The restyled 850i Base is equipped with a 5.0-liter twelve -cylinder engine that utilizes 24 valves. The engine is mated to a Getrag five-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 1991 version.

The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The 850i uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. Load balancing is provided by coil front springs and coil in the rear.

The fuel system for the 1992 850i is a traditional Bosch Motronic, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 14.50 gallons.

The 850i Base received a miles-per-gallon rating of twenty in-city driving and twenty six when it came to highway driving. Being a gas-powered non-hybrid car, this was within normal parameters.

In 1991 and 1992 the 850i Base was availble in the exterior colors of several colors. Additional options were available as special orders from the factory.
